Why Choose Mishimoto? S55 Oil Cooler Upgrades, Skid Plates & Cooling Protection Explained
Share
Cooling is one of those areas people often ignore until something goes wrong.
Everyone wants tuning, exhausts, intakes and power upgrades. But if the car cannot control heat properly, or a vulnerable cooler gets damaged, the build can go from fun to expensive very quickly.
At Track Warrior Mods, we use and recommend Mishimoto because cooling and protection matter, especially on tuned BMWs, M cars and track-focused builds.

Why choose Mishimoto?
Mishimoto is best known for performance cooling products, including radiators, intercoolers, oil coolers and supporting cooling hardware. The brand describes itself as a world leader in performance cooling products and has a wide range of cooling solutions for modified and performance cars.
That is why Mishimoto fits the type of cars we deal with.
A lot of our customers are not driving basic standard cars. They are driving tuned BMWs, fast-road cars, M cars and track-focused builds where heat management is important.
Mishimoto gives us proper options for:
- Engine cooling
- Oil cooling
- Charge cooling
- Transmission cooling
- Track-focused cooling upgrades
- Protection parts like skid plates
It is not just about adding shiny parts. It is about helping the car stay protected and consistent when it is being used properly.
Why cooling matters on tuned BMWs
When you tune a BMW, the engine works harder.
More power usually means more heat. More boost, harder driving, track use and repeated pulls all increase the demand on the cooling system.
Heat affects:
- Engine oil temperature
- Coolant temperature
- Intake air temperature
- Gearbox and transmission temperature
- Consistency under hard driving
- Long-term reliability
A car that feels quick for one pull but then gets hot and inconsistent is not a well-built car.
That is why cooling upgrades are a serious part of building a tuned BMW properly.
Why we use Mishimoto at Track Warrior Mods
We use Mishimoto because their products suit real performance use.
For engines like the N55, B58, S55 and S58, cooling becomes more important once the car is tuned or used hard.
Mishimoto parts are especially relevant for customers who:
- Run Stage 1 or Stage 2 tuning
- Use their BMW for fast-road driving
- Take their car on track
- Want better cooling consistency
- Want stronger replacement cooling parts
- Want extra protection for vulnerable components
Power is fun. But cooling and protection are what help keep the car alive.
The S55 oil cooler problem
The BMW S55 engine is found in cars like the F80 M3, F82 M4, F83 M4 and F87 M2 Competition.
It is a brilliant engine, but the factory oil cooler position is a known concern for many owners because it sits low at the front of the car.
That means it can be vulnerable to impact from underneath.
Speed bumps, road debris, kerbs, rough roads, lowered ride heights and track use can all increase the risk of damage.
If the oil cooler gets hit badly enough, it can leak oil. And if the engine loses oil pressure, things can get very expensive very quickly.
Why does the S55 oil cooler fail?
The issue is not usually that the S55 oil cooler randomly fails for no reason.
The problem is its location.
Because the oil cooler sits low underneath the front of the car, it can be exposed to impacts. Once damaged, the cooler can leak, crack or fail.
That is why owners of F80 M3s, F82 M4s and M2 Competitions often look at two upgrades:
- A stronger oil cooler upgrade
- A skid plate to protect the cooler from impact
If your car is lowered, tracked or driven hard on rough roads, this becomes even more important.
Why upgrade to a Mishimoto S55 oil cooler?
The Mishimoto S55 oil cooler is designed as a direct-fit upgrade for the 2015–2020 BMW F8X M3, M4 and M2 Competition. Mishimoto lists it with full aluminium TIG-welded construction, robust bar-and-plate construction, a 46% increase in core volume and an additional 0.42 litres of oil capacity.
That matters because oil temperature control is important on hard-driven cars.
An upgraded oil cooler can help with:
- Oil temperature control
- Cooling consistency
- Hard driving
- Track use
- Tuned S55 builds
- Replacing a damaged or tired factory cooler
If you are already tuning an S55 car, cooling should not be ignored.
Why use a Mishimoto skid plate?
The Mishimoto skid plate is designed to protect the engine and oil cooler on 2015–2020 BMW F80 M3 and F82/F83 M4 models. Mishimoto lists it as a direct-fit, high-strength aluminium plate with a powder-coated finish, designed to improve airflow to the oil cooler while protecting it from damage. It also fits with both stock and Mishimoto oil coolers.
This is the sort of upgrade that makes boring sense.
You fit it because you do not want a simple impact underneath the car to turn into a major oil cooler or engine problem.
A skid plate is useful if your BMW is:
- Lowered
- Used on rough roads
- Used on track
- Driven hard
- Running front splitters or aero
- Already had undertray or cooler damage
It is not a power mod. It is a protection mod. And on an S55 car, that matters.
Mishimoto oil cooler vs skid plate: which do you need?
They do different jobs.
Mishimoto oil cooler
The oil cooler is about improving or restoring oil cooling performance. It is a smart upgrade if you want better heat control, are replacing a damaged cooler, or use the car hard.
Mishimoto skid plate
The skid plate is about protecting the cooler and lower engine area from impact.
The strongest setup is both: upgraded cooling and better protection.
But if you are choosing based on your problem:
- Worried about impact damage? Start with the skid plate.
- Seeing high oil temperatures? Look at the oil cooler.
- Track car or hard-used tuned S55? Consider both.
Is the Mishimoto skid plate worth it?
Yes, especially on S55 cars that are lowered, driven hard or used on poor roads.
The factory underbody setup does not give the same level of proper impact protection as a dedicated aluminium skid plate.
For the cost of the part compared with the potential cost of oil cooler damage, it makes sense.
It is one of those upgrades that feels unnecessary until the day it saves you a very expensive problem.
Is the Mishimoto S55 oil cooler worth it?
Yes, if your factory cooler is damaged, tired, leaking, or if you are building a tuned or track-used S55 car.
The S55 is a serious engine, and oil temperature control is not something to ignore.
If the car is used normally on the road, you may not need every cooling upgrade immediately. But if it is tuned, tracked, lowered or driven hard, an upgraded oil cooler becomes a much more sensible investment.
What about road cars vs track cars?
Usage matters.
A standard road car that is driven gently does not need the same setup as a tuned track car.
But the more you increase power, grip and driving intensity, the more cooling and protection matters.
Road car
For a road car, a skid plate can be a smart protection upgrade, especially if the car is lowered or used on rough roads.
Fast-road car
For a fast-road S55, cooling and protection become more important. The car is seeing more load, heat and impact risk.
Track car
For a track-used S55, cooling is not optional. Oil temperatures, brake temperatures and drivetrain temperatures all matter. The skid plate also makes sense because kerbs, debris and low ride height increase the risk of impact.
Our honest advice
If you own an F80 M3, F82 M4 or M2 Competition, do not ignore the oil cooler area.
The S55 is a great engine, but the oil cooler position is vulnerable. If the car is lowered, tracked or driven hard, protecting and upgrading that area is a smart move.
Start with the problem you are trying to solve:
- Need protection? Fit a skid plate.
- Need cooling? Upgrade the oil cooler.
- Building a serious S55? Do both.
Power gets the attention. Cooling and protection keep the car alive.
